As reflected by its name, Schools Association for Formal Education envisions the provision of formal primary and secondary education.   SAFE provides formal education opportunities with thousands of Somali children in various regions of the country.  Currently more than 139 primary and secondary schools with more than 110,000 student population are members of SAFE.  Geographically, SAFE operates in most of the Somalia regions from the Kenyan boarder through South/Central and Puntland to some parts Somaliland.  SAFE coordinates, gives curricular support, upgrades their teaching methodologies and supervises the teaching performance all its member schools.

In dispensing formal education SAFE follows the 4-4-4 system which is the nationally adopted system that has been in use ever since formal education programs were initiated in Somalia.   The 4-4-4 sequence is that each level (Elementary, Intermediate and Secondary) takes 4 years to complete making the total years of schooling from standard one to form four 12 good years.  The medium of instruction in use in SAFE Schools include Somali, Arabic and English languages.  The core subjects that are taught in SAFE primary schools are:  Somali Language, Islamic studies, Arabic, English, social studies (geography, history and civics), math, science and business education.  In our secondary schools the core subjects taught are the same as in the primary schools except the science becomes physics, chemistry and biology.  Somali literature is also a core subject in the secondary education.  Despite the mounting challenges facing formal education system in Somalia in terms of curriculum, SAFE puts emphasis on the use of Somali National Curriculum syllabus to make sure that centralized exams and student transfers among SAFE schools are always possible.
